trip report: the white barn inn
One of the many things that happened while I was NOT blogging was being married for one year.
ONE YEAR!
[insert paragraph pondering time's relativity here]
As mentioned earlier, we had a wedding nearly every weekend this summer, so the actual date of our first anniversary fell on the Sunday after we celebrated our friends Zach and Carol's wedding in York, ME. Being the diligent planner that I am, as soon as we got our save the date for Zach and Carol's, I immediately booked us a room for Sunday night at The White Barn Inn, which is just a few miles up the road in Kennebunk (also home to one of my best friends, HI DIANE!).
I have written about my love of Relais & Chateaux a few times. In the last year or so, we've visited The White Elephant, Castle Hill Inn and Blackberry Farm, and had top notch service, food and rooms at all of them. White Barn was no different and truly a perfect place to spend an anniversary. You can see the main building, where our room was, above. Yes, I know it's not white.
And if you've never been to Southern Maine, I recommend a trip immediately. We made pit stops in Portland, York and Kennebunk during this long weekend and each one is so charming it makes you want to hug the street signs. Also, and most important: the food in these towns is bananas. I ate lobster for every meal, as one should in this part of the world.
How much did we like our room? I'mma tell you a story: The World Cup finals happened to fall on this Sunday. While I debated exacting a price from Mike for wanting to watch the game at a sports bar on our anniversary (I mean, that's worth what, like 2 Birkins?), when it finally came time for kick off (is that what it's called?), our room was so comfortable neither of us wanted to leave. Also, the bottle of chilled champagne and gobs of Maine blueberries didn't hurt. And, in all seriousness, I enjoy watching soccer much more than many other sports because the players are far more attractive and not wearing silly helmets. Does this mean I didn't fall asleep on the giant, deliciously comfortable bed? No.
On to our anniversary dinner!
Besides being a lovely inn, White Barn also has a stellar restaurant that's located -- you guessed it -- in an old barn.
Late summer produce (and crustaceans) were so fresh and sweet and glorious I could have eaten this meal three times a day all season long. But even just once was spectacular. Side note: are these pictures big enough?! Hahaha.
And everything ended with a sweet note.
Thank you to everyone at White Barn for such a special night.
