the day i forgot my ring

Ring dish with no ring!

OK. So it had to happen eventually. Internets: this morning I forgot to put my engagement ring on.

There are a few immediate side effect I'm noticing. One, I already seem to have a tan line on my finger, which is medium-level unattractive. Two, I feel surprisingly more naked than I thought I would. This shouldn't come as a total shock, considering I've been known to jolt awake in the middle of the night when I feel like my ring has disappeared. This happened almost every single night for the first few weeks I was engaged. Thankfully it's subsided substantially, but my unconscious must really not trust me not to misplace it. This is why Mike bought insurance way before he ever got down on one knee. Which leads me to...

Important tip: GET INSURANCE FOR YOUR RING BEFORE YOU EVER WEAR IT. Straight men who read this blog (not including Mike, so you probably number approximately zero. (Not to say my gay guys don't exchange rings! But generally not with diamonds.)): purchasing insurance for your lady's ring is equally important to whatever bling you decide upon. Why, you may ask? Well, if said lady happens to lose her ring without insurance, guess what? You're going to have to buy it all over again. Also, don't be cheap: insurance for when she's only wearing the ring? Lame. Pretty sure you generally don't lose a diamond when it's on your finger. Pretty sure it's when you TAKE IT OFF.

[As an aside, I know this blog makes me seem horribly anal-retentive. I think if we met in real life, however, Internet, you would find me to be quite lovely. Plus! Mike always yells as me for leaving my stuff on the dining room table. I can be messy!]

So how did the omission happen? Exactly how I thought it would: I forgot to put it back on after my shower. This is pretty much the only time I ever take it off, actually. I wear it to the gym, I wear it to bed, and I've even worn it in the ocean. But the combination of soap and water makes it slide around so much (and I ALWAYS get it caught in my hair when I'm shampooing) that I've found it's much better just to take it off*. And this morning, I was so proud of myself for actually making scrambled eggs for breakfast that I ended up running late and dashed off without it.

*Insider tip: I highly recommend getting a ring dish. I was gifted some adorable ones from my gals Jordi and Kara and Hanna and they make me smile every time I use them. Plus, it's nice to have a designated spot to leave your ring when it is (rarely) off your finger. Peep this one here!

Today's story's moral is the following: I've realized I won't melt if I leave the apartment without my favorite accessory. But the absence of said ring today definitely serves as a reminder of how much I do like wearing it, and more important, love the lad who gave it to me.
